Hungry! Hungry! Hippolo 3! 5 of us are headed down to Tally this weekend for our first Hippolo. While there are only 20 teams signed up at the moment, the teams seem to be pretty stacked for the SE. Brett, Graham and Andy are playing together and I (Adam) am playing with Jacques and Bernard from Mobile. It’s going to be interesting to see who wins this tournament.

Also, I really hope we have time to hit up Soul Veg, which I just found out a few weeks ago exists in Tally! I haven’t been to Tallahassee since my band played at Big Daddy’s, lol.

Graham and I (Adam) are headed to the big HOTlanta tonight for the “Georgia Is For Lovers” polo tournament. We’re teaming up with Theo from Savannah and hoping to win some games. I’ve been wanting to play in ATL for a while now, but the opportunity just hasn’t come. It’s gunna be great hanging with all the SE polo fam. A Beginner's Night?

There’s 2 reasons for this post. First off, our numbers have dwindled during the few cold months we have to deal with in Memphis. If it drops below 40 degrees we all act like we were just thrown into the middle of Siberia in our birthday suite and the only remedy is to stay at home in front of the fire. So we’ve only played polo like 3 times in the past 2 months. Pretty frustrating. I realize I’m part of the problem because of my dedication to the Memphis Grizzlies. But give me a break, this is the best team they’ve had in years!

Second, I have heard from numerous people about how they would really like to try out bike polo but they don’t really want to jump in a game on our normal polo nights. Seems to intense for them. Understandable. I was the same way. I watched for several weeks before I was forced to play.

With that said, we need more people! We want to grow our polo club and want the sport to reach as many people as possible. We have tossed around the idea for a “Beginner’s Night” in the past, but never put it together. So I want us to get more serious about this. I would like to have a “Beginner’s Night” either once a month or a few times a year.

I imagine a beginner’s night to be a chance for you to try out mallets and bikes. You can play on any bike you have, but you’re welcome to try out one of ours. You’ll get a chance to ride around the court and get a feel for pushing the ball around and taking shots. You’ll get to play with other inexperienced, less aggressive players and figure out the game and the handful of rules.

Brett and I (Adam) drove up to DC and met up with our boy Danny from Miami. We went 4-2 the first day and then 1-2 the next day. Two of our games on Sunday went into sudden death and we blew a 3-0 lead against the Pittsburgh fellas. Oh well. Maybe next year we’ll qualify for NA’s.

We’re playing some polo all day Saturday on the rooftop of the parking garage to the Sears Building! This will probably be one of the best spots we’ve ever played at. I can already see how awesome the pictures are gunna look! Our official time to play is 7pm-8:30pm, but I believe we’re going to be playing all day before that and until they make us leave.

We want this to be an opportunity for people to try it out if they never have. We’re going to be playing some beginner games as well as some more advanced games. All you need to bring is a bike, we have a mallet you can borrow.

had a blast this past weekend in Ft Lauderdale. drove about 1,000 miles roundtrip. we kinda got unlucky the first day. 3 of the 4 teams we played in the swiss rounds placed in the top 10. oh well, better luck next time.

anyway, here’s a video of the final game, which unfortunately was a 5-0. the game those two teams played earlier was a way better game, 5-4, but i didn’t get a video of that.

huge thanks to Danny and FTL for stepping up and making this tournament happen! and congrats to all the teams who qualified for NA’s!

Well, we weren’t able to take any teams to SCBPC this year because of the new rules with registration. I (Adam) was the only person that made it in. Our team, Blind Dates, tied for 17th place, lol. But I was able to take some photos and grab a video of the final game.

Friendlies, this weekend!:

Memphis Bike Polo invites you to some friendlies featuring Memphis, Little Rock and Jackson! Starting pickup around noon and playing til the sun goes down. We may do a bench minor later in the day, if everyone’s up to it!

If you bring “adult beverages” make sure they’re concealed and out-of-sight, because the police in Southaven are really bored. We got a visit from the cops last time because we were cursing, lol.

If you plan on spending the night, leave a message and we’ll find you a place to crash.

Adam’s band (www.armasecreta.com) is playing that night at the Young Ave Deli if anyone wants to stick around and party - more info on that here.
